A multicultural visionary
Matthew Patrick is a bold and innovative creative professional working in film, photography, and environmental art. His career spans feature films, TV films, short films, and webisodes, where he has served as director and oftentimes writer, editor, and producer.
Born in Michigan to a Japanese mother and an American father, Matthew was raised in Japan, India, and the U.S. This multicultural upbringing shaped his keen observational skills, which he applies to his visual storytelling. He studied directing at Hampshire College, where he made the short film Triptych, which earned a Student Academy Award®. After graduation, he moved to New York City, immersing himself in the independent film and art scene, and studying acting under Stella Adler.
early career
Patrick later moved to Hollywood to attend the American Film Institute (AFI), earning an MFA in Directing. His short film Graffiti received international acclaim, winning multiple international gold medals and earning an Academy Award® nomination. The film is entirely visual, without any dialogue. Following his time at AFI, Patrick was selected as a Directing Fellow at the Sundance Film Institute June Lab, where he worked with Stanley Kramer and Robert Redford.
His feature film debut, Atrapados (Trapped), was funded by an NEA Independent Filmmaker’s Grant and premiered at the prestigious Telluride Film Festival. It’s the story of two people who are trapped underground, and they're slowly starving. At the beginning of the film, main actor Julio Torresoto weighed 200 lbs. Over the course of shooting, Patrick would wait for him to lose weight before shooting the next scene. Within 8 months, they filmed Torresoto at an astonishing 120 lbs. People wondered if they’d switched actors in the middle of production! Then Torresoto picked up weight again in order to shoot more scenes when he was at a middle weight. It’s a unique movie.
hollywood work
Patrick’s first major studio film, Hider in the House, featured Gary Busey — tragically, Busey suffered a severe brain injury shortly after completing principal photography on the film. In the years that have followed, Patrick has directed cable films — including Tainted Blood starring Raquel Welch, and Lifetime’s Night Owl starring Jennifer Beals — and he continues to explore other artistic avenues in still photography and largescale multimedia art installations. He is an active member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, serving on its Short Film/Feature Animation Category Executive Committee for over 25 years. He is also a member of the Directors Guild of America.
